Concept 1

The superlative

Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper or lower limit of quality. We used this structure to stand out a noun as the top of a particular group of other nouns.

Like the comparative structure we have to change the adjectives base form in the superlative form by following specific rules, take a look:

When we have short or one syllable adjectives ending in a consonant we usually only ad ¨est¨ here are some examples.

Adjective

Superlative

Big

The biggest

Small

The smallest

Tall

The tallest

When we have adjectives endind in ¨e¨ we only add ¨st¨

Adjective

Comparative

Nice

The nicest

Cute

The cutest

Large

The largest

When we have adjectives ending in ¨y¨ we omit the ¨y¨ and we add ¨iest¨

Adjective

Comparative

Angry

The angriest

Healthy

The healthiest

Friendly

The friendliest

When we have adjectives that are consider large or with 2 syllables or more we keep the adjective in simple form and only add ¨the most¨ look at the following table.

Adjective

Comparative

Intelligent

The most intelligent

Handsome

The most handsome

Beautiful

The most beautiful

When using this type of adjectives, we need to make sure that we always compare in a group and that we never forget to include the word ¨the¨ after the adjective.

Look at the following examples:

Jordan is the most talented player in history.
Checo Perez is the fastest driver.
Pumas is the best soccer team.
UNAM is the most amazing university in Latin America.

We can also use the superlatives to express the lowest quality of things. It is the opposite of ¨the most¨, to express this form we need to use ¨the least¨

Look at the following examples in both forms.

McDonalds is the most popular restaurant.
Nike is one of the most expensive brands.
Panam shoes are the least expensive ones.
Sansui is the least popular television.

I hope that all this information can help you with the tasks ahead. If you have any doubts, you can always come back to this section and double check the info.

Let’s start practising!

Javier Hernández Balcazar is also known as Chicharito Hernández. He is one of the most famous football players nowadays. He is young, rich handsome and popular among children and the ladies. On the other hand, Rafael Marquez is experienced, mature, handsome too, but he has been linked to mafia recently, so he is not that popular anymore.
